Trent Reznor leaves Twitter, blames fat chicks

I know, what a small thing to focus on, but I can’t help it.

So, as a person on the Internet, you’re probably aware that lots of people hide behind anonymous names and say cruel and vicious things that they’d never say face to face under their actual personas. I know! Who’d have thunk it! But, since you’ve spent more than one day here in CyberLand, you’ve seen this, I’m sure. Apparently, Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails to non-musical people), never realized this. Listen, he’s a rock star, I’m sure he doesn’t hang out on forums all the time, kind of like how George Bush I had trouble using the scanner while buying groceries that time. But seriously, all props to him for giving it a whirl and interacting with us fans, the common people, on his own website and on Twitter. If you’ve talked to me about Twitter you know that I honestly thought he was the hands-down funniest person on there and it was very, very cool how seemingly open and honest he was. Even people who didn’t brave fire-hazard crowds at Hammerjacks in 1989 to see NIN play would crack up at his comments.

And then I guess there were lots of trolls and people said nasty things or were upset that some promotion didn’t go right… I don’t know, I just read Trent’s tweets, I have no idea what people said back to him. I gather this bothered him a wee bit and he decided to stop tweeting. OK, that’s too bad, I’ll miss those hysterical comments, but when I went to read the long rant (if you listen to NIN songs, you can imagine this guy can rant) on the NIN website about it, I was really unsettled. He goes on about all the vicious stuff that people said to him and his fiancee and how people imagined he was a certain way and were pissed off when he wasn’t. Fair enough. Then he gets to a population from a certain forum where people were especially rotten. It goes like this:

[redacted forum] is the home of the absolutely worst people I’ve ever come across. It’s populated mainly by unattractive plump females who publicly fantasize about having sex with guys in bands. Kind of like a role-playing game where people NOBODY will fuck make up stories about their incredible sexual encounters with people they WISH they could fuck.

There’s more (some of where he advises them how to commit suicide) but I had to stop there and write. Ouch. I don’t care whether you’re plump or unattractive or both or neither (and yes, sorry, it is possible to be both plump and attractive). This is really disturbing. If you’re not familiar with it, NIN’s music is mostly full of pain and anger… the sort of songs that society’s outcasts embrace as a way to release the emotions they can’t express and to find comfort in the discovery that they are not alone. What a horrible, horrible thing to have the person who seemed so connected to them, so understanding of their pain, slam them as unlovable and pathetic. I understand these folks from that forum were especially hateful. Do you need to insult their appearance and have this make your argument that they are worthless? Confidence is attractive. Way to take away your fans’ confidence in themselves, Trent. I’m not talking about the people who spewed hatred at you. I’m talking about your actual fans who are probably looking at themselves in the mirror tonight and saying, “I guess this is why I can’t get a date.”

I’m having a hard time listening to Nine Inch Nails music right now. I hope that passes… but I’m not sure.

UPDATE: Trent Reznor posted an… explanation? I don’t think it’s an apology.

I have no issue with PLUMP people and I apologize if some of you incorrectly inferred I was equating being overweight to being unworthy. I used that term for two reasons: one – these cunts on [redacted forum] portray themselves as in a very inaccurate way, because they can. It’s their one place they can wield a little power and escape their pathetic lives. Two – I knew it would hurt them and it most definitely has.
Place my comments in context. If you haven’t seen the type of comments we’ve been getting and the sheer level of ignorance, you have no reference in which to comment on this.

I know MOST of you are not a part of this and I didn’t mean to offend you – this situation has angered and saddened me.

Oh. Well that makes it all OK.

His non-apology makes it worse, not better. Assuming someone who is bitter and angry is so because they are fat . . . well, I’m just not sure how you could sink lower. I’m sure it’s possible, I just can’t think of how.

It’s sad. I used to look up to him and really love NIN. Now, he just sounds like a fat bully.

Sounds like we need to send Sharon Osborne, Deborah Harry and Ann Wilson to kick his ass.

Good point, Mo. Of course their lives are pathetic; they’re fat. And so they must lash out at him.

I wish I could separate the music from the man and continue to enjoy it. I hope I can.

Sarp, if only Mama Cass were alive…

No more Reznor for me. I hope all the ‘plump’ people stop buying his music. Instead of lashing at the perpetrators, he pokes fun at fat people. That’s like saying such and such forum is replete with Jews.
