Some people rescue kittens or stray dogs or forlorn pieces of furniture lying on the sidewalk. I am not amongst those people. What I am here to do is rescue songs from the clutches of the advertising industry, intent on ruining the meanings and associations of brilliant songs and instead making you think of cars and candy when you hear them. But no! I can’t have that happen. Not on my watch. And so, here’s our latest entry (I may have to have a category for these, I’m thinking – how depressing is that?).

This song is both sad and hopeful. It looks back and forward and even though the tone and melody are mournful and the lyrics have more than a touch of cynical, I’ve always chosen to see sincere hope in it. Especially during some of the worst times in my life. These times did not involve cartoon M&M’s riding on a tour bus, I assure you. Nor will they ever.

I’m actually kind of shocked that I’ve never chosen a track by this artist to be an iSotW, simply because I am so in love with so many songs by him (it was them, but it was really him, Matt Johnson), but, you know, fate has intervened to make this the first of probably many. And in the meantime, Matt has the money from M&M/Mars, Inc to keep him warm. Not that I blame him, he deserves it.

I haven’t done this for a while, but here are the lyrics. I ask you, does this make you want to eat M&M’s?

Well… you didn’t wake up this morning
’cause you didn’t go to bed
You were watching the whites of your eyes turn red
The calendar on your wall is ticking the days off

You’ve been reading some old letters
You smile and think how much you’ve changed
All the money in the world couldn’t buy back those days

You pull back the curtains, and the sun burns into your eyes
You watch a plane flying across a clear blue sky
This is the day your life will surely change
This is the day when things fall into place

You could’ve done anything, if you’d wanted
And all your friends and family think that you’re lucky
But the side of you they’ll never see
Is when you’re left alone with the memories
That hold your life together like
Glue

You pull back the curtains, and the sun burns into your eyes
You watch a plane flying across a clear blue sky
This is the day your life will surely change
This is the day when things fall into place

This is the day your life will surely change…

Pretty much anything makes me want to eat M&Ms…

I just love reading the lyrics as if they were never set to music. Good one Bec.

Touche, Soxy.

KP, I no longer have that ability with this song, but I tried to do that too.
